Our Ethos
At the heart of the White Tigers Class is our belief in working hard and playing hard. We provide a nurturing, stimulating, and inclusive environment where children are encouraged to be independent, resilient, and ambitious in their learning. Supported by Mr Walker, our mixed-age class offers a dynamic and flexible curriculum designed to meet the needs of every learner.
A Curriculum with Purpose
Our curriculum promotes high standards while encouraging curiosity and creativity.
- Pupils write for real purpose, developing their voice across genres and audiences.
- Reading for pleasure is central to our learning culture, with a wide range of high-quality literature shared and discussed.
- A focus on rich vocabulary development across all subjects empowers children to express their ideas confidently and effectively.
Learning Through Experience
Children actively engage in hands-on exploration across the curriculum:
Science
- Designing and testing parachutes
- Investigating the properties of materials
- Creating erupting volcanoes using chemical reactions
Design & Technology
- Testing and designing bridges, exploring strength, structure, and materials
- Investigating how design impacts function and form
Art & Design
- Experimenting with different styles, techniques, and materials
- Studying artists, architects and designers whilst applying creative processes to personal and collaborative work
Mathematics
- Developing fluency, problem-solving, and reasoning through practical, real-world applications
- Using concrete resources and visual models to support deep understanding
Sports & Physical Activity
We are proud of our active curriculum and the wide range of sports on offer. All children benefit from:
- Weekly sessions in our on-site swimming pool
- Opportunities to compete in inter-school events
- A varied programme including football, netball, gymnastics, athletics, and dance
These activities promote physical health, teamwork, and perseverance, while ensuring every child finds a way to participate and enjoy.
Enrichment & Exploration
We enrich our curriculum through visits and special events, including:
- Residential trips to Stanley Head Outdoor Education Centre, encouraging independence and team building
- A memorable visit to the Houses of Parliament, meeting Lord Knight of Weymouth and experiencing the London Eye
- Derby Museum to explore the Ancient Egyptians Exhibition.
We attend cultural days and take part in transition activities with local middle and secondary schools. These experiences help pupils build confidence, understand new environments, and prepare for the next step in their educational journey.
Creative Expression
Creative arts are a valued part of our curriculum.
Each year ends with a full-scale class production, allowing every child to perform and sing. Last year, The Wizard of Ozwas a huge success, and the children are extremely excited to perform Matilda this summer.
In addition to drama, pupils also participate in Christmas carol services and help tell the story of Easter, showcasing their talents and building confidence in front of an audience.
Religious Education
Our approach to Religious Education promotes understanding, respect, and curiosity about different faiths and beliefs. Through classroom learning, themed days, and visits to places of worship, children gain a broad and balanced view of the world’s diverse communities.
A highlight of our RE curriculum is the visit to the Derby Open Centre, where pupils explore major world faiths such as Islam, Hinduism, and Sikhism. These experiences help foster empathy, celebrate diversity, and encourage meaningful discussion, supporting our pupils to become thoughtful, informed citizens.
Character & Community
Pupils are encouraged to take increasing responsibility within school and the wider community. We uphold and teach:
- British Values
- Protected Characteristics
- Our school motto: “Let Your Light Shine”, reminding each child to show their qualities in all they do.
Supporting Aspirations
Whether children aspire to be scientists, historians, authors, musicians, or athletes, we support everyone to reach their full potential. Through high-quality teaching, encouragement, and a culture that celebrates growth, the White Tigers Class is a joyful, purposeful environment—where every child can thrive.
